THE FYLDE SAND DUNES PROJECT
Amy Pennington
A big thank you to Amy from Lancashire Wildfowl Trust who gave us a very interesting and informative presentation on the work of the Fylde Sand Dunes Project.
I think it is fair to say we were all really impressed with the amount of work undertaken to protect and enhance the dunes on the Fylde Coast. So important for coastal defences and the environment.
Thank you, a fantastic night.

TRAVELS IN ASIA IN A 2CV
Peta Allingham
Our speaker this evening was Peta Allingham talking about her travels through Asia in her Quirky car. Explore some of the unusual and interesting corners of Asia in a vehicle that is usually an attraction in its own right, encountering conditions that most travellers manage to avoid, but coping with whatever comes her way with good humour.
And in time honoured tradition we celebrated our WI Birthday with bubbly and cake and with lots of happy faces.

BLUE SKIES HOSPITAL FUND & 75TH BIRTHDAY OF NHS
Lynn Peat
A great evening was had by all at the meeting on Monday. The group heard an informative talk from Lynn Peat representing the Blue Skies Hospital Fund. It is fair to say that many of the ladies knew little about the charity and we were all impressed , not only by the talk but also the work of the charity and the initiatives that have been funded by the charity to improve the patient experience at Blackpool NHS Foundation Trust. Thanks go to Lynn. Update from Alice Marquis-Carr
"I was blown away hearing about some of the equipment funded by this Charity. An MRI scanner for A&E to aid speedy diagnosis and 5 machines enabling patients to have Chemotherapy in the comfort of their own home to name just 2."

A NIGHT AT THE RACES
What a fun time we had where our members were the runners and riders. Some teams lost all their chips by overly enthusiastic betting and the two teams with the winning pot of £325 were awarded a fabulous prize to share and the glory of careful wagers!

MY LIFE AS AN APPRENTICE
We welcomed Barbara Brown to our fold and what we didn't know was that she had had a fall at home on the Thursday before our meeting and wasn't found until the following morning! Barbara didn't want to let us down and she certainly showed a lot of spirit in coming along to entertain us all this evening. Barbara thrilled us with her talents and telling us about her training from a very young girl, to her achievements in her more senior years, a degree at the age of 70 and her masters at 80! Fantastic.
See below a very small selection of her work which was a pleasure to see, touch and admire by all our members.

Victorians Unbuttoned
This evening we welcomed Fiona Smithson who gave us a fascinating talk on Victorian underwear. It was often the structures beneath Victorian clothing that gave women's fashion its form. Corsets (also known as stays) moulded the waist, while cage crinolines supported voluminous skirts, and bustles projected a dress out from behind. Fashionable Victorian women wore an array of other undergarments, from corset covers that hid the lines of their stays, to petticoats for added volume and warmth. Exactly what was worn and how it was made changed rapidly throughout the era, influenced by forces like technological innovation and shifting attitudes towards gender. |
Here's Nina showing us the front and back of Victorian ladies bloomers!

Mary's Meals
Mary's Meals
We had a wonderful presentation delivered by Joss from Mary’s Meals. The work undertaken by the charity has such a positive influence upon children in some of the poorest countries. Joss gave us such a wealth of information and everyone was really engaged with his talk. A donation has been made by A&F WI to Mary’s Meals.
The History of Mary's Meals
Mary’s Meals grew out of a charity called Scottish International Relief (SIR), which was set up after Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow and his brother Fergus took aid from their home in Argyll, Scotland to Bosnia-Herzegovina, during the conflict in 1992. Over the next 10 years, SIR expanded. It began building homes for abandoned children in Romania, helped returning refugees in Liberia by setting up mobile clinics, and continued to deliver material aid to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as funding many additional projects. SIR relied heavily on the generosity of local people in the village of Dalmally in Argyll, Scotland, who diligently donated food, blankets and other items of aid, which were then stored in the family shed. That same shed still serves as the global headquarters of Mary’s Meals to this day.
Mary's Meals was founded in 2002. The Mary’s Meals campaign was born in 2002 when Magnus visited Malawi during a famine and met a mother dying from AIDS. When Magnus asked her eldest son Edward what his dreams were in life, he replied simply: “I want to have enough food to eat and to go to school one day.”
That moment was a key part of the inspiration which led to the founding of Mary’s Meals, which began by feeding just 200 children in Malawi in 2002. Today, we feed 2,429,182 hungry children every school day across 18 countries.
The charity is named in honour of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who brought up her own child in poverty.
